How much popcorn do you need to fill up your home / cubicle / birthday box? Use this popcorn calculator to find out! Inspiration: Real Genius popcorn scene.

Me to my husband: Remember that movie Real Genius from the 80’s?

Husband’s response: The one where they had the laser and blew up the house with popcorn?

Yeah, that one!

You can read about how they had semi’s loaded up with popcorn they had popped for three months. It was a massive amount of popcorn to dramatically explode through the windows and doors:

The Behind-The-Scenes Story Of ‘Real Genius’

But what if you wanted to fill up a house? No busted windows or doors. Keep that buttery smell all in!*

Or filling up an office of someone who was just on a honeymoon or maternity/paternity leave?

”…I’m asking for a friend.”

Here’s your popcorn calculator:

The Research Behind the Calculator:

The measurements behind the popcorn calculator: 3 bags of Act II Butter Lovers 3-2.75 oz bags. Each bag was individually measured and the average, 8.958333 cups (2.119436 liters), is what is used in the calculation.

I popped the 3-2.75 oz bags of Act II Butter Lovers popcorn (there were 3 bags in the box). Each bag was individually measured and the average, 8.958333 cups (2.119436 liters), is what is used in the calculation.

Calculating how many cups are needed, and then how many boxes are needed (yes, that says 947,928.96 cups to fill up an 1,100 sq ft house!).

Details on the Popcorn Calculator:

The calculator assumes a horizontal ceiling. If you have a vaulted ceiling, don’t fret. You are probably not eight feet tall. If you have a vaulted ceiling you still won’t be able to see out of an entire room of popcorn filled up to 8 feet.

In the case where the calculator is used for a two story house you may need to adjust the percentage of space used–that is the wiggle room in between the floors.

Wouldn’t it have been easier to just go with an air popped popcorn so it is healthier / doesn’t wake the kids up when the microwave goes DING! every 3-4 minutes?

Yeah, but

  1. I don’t have a popcorn maker.
  2. This was already an over-the-top, just-for-entertainment, ridiculous kind of fun calculator.
  3. It was way more fun to make a behind-the-scenes video with the microwave kind.

*The article on the “behind the scenes of Real Genius” also mentioned the popcorn was only good for one day and had to be treated. We also know that is true. Most of us have had the experience of forgetting to eat the entire bag of popcorn in one sitting (that is the real serving size, right?!?!), and are disappointed when we try the leftovers the next day. So in all reality, that lovely butter smell we all crave probably isn’t realistic either, but neither is using this calculator for a real solution. 😉
