**Our honesty policy: This post may contain affiliate links and I may be compensated if you make a purchase at no extra cost to you. Some are, some aren't--I do some comparison shopping. The important thing is you will know exactly what we are talking about. Drop a note/comment if you have any questions on the products as these are materials and tools we use on our own projects.
Sometimes there is no substitute for literally showing someone how to do something.
How often do we all turn to YouTube to learn something new? If not YouTube, then Google catches your eye with a video in the search results.
I do it myself too!
You may have noticed I’ve dabbled a bit in video to highlight some of the ideas I’ve explained in a post over the summer. After a few conversations with some more experienced bloggers and YouTubers…
…I’ve taken the plunge.
This ex-engineer is now developing speaking, presenting, memorization, and beautification skills. It’s got to be a package deal to keep someone watching past 10 seconds, right?
I’ve actually surprised myself with the initial results:
- Showing and describing at the same time is enjoyable!
- Sometimes a post and a video paired together are the best forums for showing a technique (video) and describing something in detail with a diagram (post).
- It is also much faster to produce a video than a blog post. SEO for photos takes hours…and a brew. You all know how many photos are in some of these posts. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes, as we talked about in this post.
The cons:
For those of you who have been here a while, the videos may seem familiar. At 136 published posts, I have a lot of content that can get translated into a video. The fun part is that I am expanding on what is already there. So even if you probably know what I’m going to explain, you still will learn something new.
I’ve also discovered my HTC cell phone–my only video camera–is dying. It can only shoot videos about 5 minutes before crashing and corrupting the video in the process.
So the videos coming out are definitely pieced together. They are also as high quality as a four year old phone can eek out. But I don’t think it is all the phone. I think some of the quality is also getting lost when the merging software re-encodes it as well…there is so much to learn!
Want better videos? Subscribe, watch, and hit that like button to support!
As for a posting schedule on both YouTube and this blog, that remains to be seen. Once a week on both forums is the current goal–Wednesday for the blog (these two weeks of Monday status updates don’t count) and Thursday for YouTube.
I’ll let you know if that changes.
Thank you for your continued readership, support, and now, viewership!

Just in case you are curious…yes, there will be more than just tiling focused videos.
#1. It is still hot outside.
#2. I have not bought a lavalier microphone yet so inside is better for sound. Please add any Android recommendations in the comments!
#3. Videos happen during naptime. Despite the Dohm’s presence, I still want to keep noise down and a couple doors closed between a peacefully sleeping child and a video shoot isn’t a terrible idea.
#4. The sunlight is really good in the bathroom at that time of the day.
#5. As you might have noticed…I love tiling!
