Hotec H-U05 Review Sound Check!

Last week we made a seriously fun review video focusing on the improved sound quality on the JustNeedsPaint YouTube channel. The Hotec H-U05 has been a game changer, making the videos come to life.

Everything needed for the Hotec H-U05 wireless lavalier microphone to go live!

I’m no longer limited to indoor shots, hiding out where there is silence…in an echo-y bathroom.

While I am, in fact, shamelessly inviting you over to my YouTube channel to check it out, don’t worry, this Hotec wireless lav mic review IS home improvement related (although there is still quite a bit below like some closeups and tips that weren’t included in the video).

It won’t disappoint!

We had a great time making it. The pint sized crew members proved they knew how to throw down the hammer (literally) on cue.

Also, don’t miss the description. It’s an entertaining one.

As you saw, the Hotec H-U05 will enhance the obvious sounds around you, such as a diesel engine, HEPA air scrubbers and saws, along with lots of hammering. At the same time, while the diesel sounds more like the beast it is, there is no drowning out my voice. You can still hear exactly what I’m trying to explain while I show you the “current” project.

Other details to fill out what wasn’t captured on video or in the description:

Tip #1: There is more in the box. I just haven’t used the headset. It also works with a number of other devices besides an iPhone and Android cell phones. It is compatible with cameras, DSLRs, tablets, NoteBooks, and desktops.

Tip #2: Those transmitter two cables that look exactly alike are NOT exactly alike.

The phone and camera transmitter cables are identical. Those tags are not.

When I first tried out the lav mic I was pissed. I spent over an hour trying to get it to work on my phone.

I inadvertently read the cables wrong. I saw the word “camera” and automatically translated that to “cell phone” because 95% of the time I am using my phone as a camera.

As we used to say at work, “reading is overrated”.

Don’t make this same mistake.

Tip #3: You want to see those two blue lights when you start filming: the battery is good to go and the connection to the receiver is good to go too.

Tip #4: You can change the frequency if you find there is a conflict in the airwaves. The channel display disappears after a little while to conserve battery.

Tip #5: Here’s a picture of what is involved when recharging. There is a dual USB cable that goes into both the receiver and transmitter to allow charging at the same time off one USB. It takes about 2 hours.

Side note: You may have noticed the plastic protective cover is still on both the receiver and transmitter. I’m not going to take it off until it falls off. I wasn’t joking about dropping these things and I’ll take any protective measures until they fall off by natural means.

Tip #6: The transmitter has a 3.5 mm jack.

We had to buy a C-cable adapter for the HTC U11.

Not a duplicate photo! Notice the little white adapter.

Everything needed for a C-USB only cell phone (such as the HTC U11) using the Hotec H-U05 wireless lav mic. That white adapter is NOT included with the wireless mic.

This is why I’ll probably be upgrading to a Samsung 10+ because it still has a 3.5 MM jack. This leaves me with the ability to take a video and charge at the same time.

Tip #7: I would expect the dual transmitter H-U25 has similar sound quality since it is the same components, only duplicate.

The Hotec H-U05 Review summary:

This is a great entry level wireless lavalier microphone. The sound quality is infinitely better than no mic.

We had a lot of fun making this Hotec H-U05 review video (except finding out a glass backed HTC U11 phone doesn’t drop from a ladder gracefully), I might have to create an outtakes video soon.
